Meditation Without Visualization

A woman wearing headphones looks puzzled while listening to a meditation on her phone.

If you can’t picture a beach, a glowing light, or anything else in your mind, you can still meditate.

Visualization is one meditation technique. It isn’t a requirement.

Meditation can use sound, breath, physical sensation, words, rhythm, or simple awareness of what is happening right now. None of these practices require you to create a picture in your head.

Meditation and aphantasia

Aphantasia is the inability to voluntarily create mental images. It can make guided visualizations confusing or frustrating, especially if no one has ever explained that other ways of meditating exist.

The answer isn’t to try harder to see something. It is to choose a different place for your attention to rest.

I created a free guided meditation for people who want to meditate without visualization.
