Why I Quit Chasing Consistency — and What I Do Instead

Tired of failing at routines? Let's talk about a neurodivergent approach that honors your body and redefines what success really means in wellness.

Episode 5 of Unmasking Wellness

If you’ve ever beat yourself up for not being “consistent,” especially with wellness routines, this one’s for you.

Most advice out there says:

Success = consistency.
Show up every day. Do the same thing. Never break the chain.

But for neurodivergent minds and bodies? That formula can feel punishing.

Here’s Why It Doesn’t Work (and Why It’s Not Your Fault)

Let’s be real:

  • Our energy, focus, and needs change—daily, monthly, seasonally.

  • Life isn’t a straight line, especially if you're navigating ADHD, sensory sensitivity, or burnout.

  • The “consistency equals worth” model comes from systems that prioritize productivity over people—yep, we’re looking at you, capitalism and patriarchy.

What Actually Helps: Seasonal Return

Instead of chasing perfect routines, I follow a seasonal approach:

  • 🌀 Winter = more rest, slower mornings

  • 🌱 Spring = more movement, new projects

  • 🔥 Summer = higher energy, outward focus

  • 🍂 Fall = reflection, transition, letting go

It's about returning, again and again, as many times as you need.

Return means coming back. Again and again.
The pause doesn't erase the practice.

The return is THE practice.

Try This: A Tiny Reframe

👉 Think of one area where you’ve felt guilty for “not being consistent.”
Now ask: Did I return? Even once? That matters more than how long you paused.
